More than Words (Asha)

Poetry tends to elude me a little with it’s many allusions, hidden meanings and metaphoric references, but these poets really kept me engaged during both sets. Rommi and her partner Jenni worked so harmoniously together that it left me amazed at how meticulous their collaboration must be. The three distinct voices Rommi embodied outside her natural speaking tone commanded my attention and brought to life the different point of views her poems expressed. It was also interesting to hear her explanation of her last poem in which the male character relates the shape of the bass to the curves of a woman. Tracie also brought her own unique element of sound poetry that was definitely an experience. Her finesse at improv allowed me, as an audience member, to bear witness to her form her poems in real time making her art all the more palpable and immediate. Hearing both poets helped me in broadening my limited definition on what spoken word can be.
