Poetry Event at CSI St. George (Haynia)

I went into the poetry event without any real expectations, but came out pleasantly surprised. What stuck out to me most was the little things that seemed to go into each poet’s craft.  For Rommi Smith, it appeared that she put a lot time into the nuances of each of her voices to make sure she evoked just the right feel for the audience. This is most apparent with the final voice she did, which was a man’s voice. She was able to give her voice just the right intonation and a noticeable rasp which made it sound very authentic.  Tracie Morris’ improvisation left an impression on me, and made me reconsider what could be considered poetry.  She seemed to take existing concepts and play with your expectations of what you think you’re about to hear. She came off as very natural despite how unnatural what she was doing looked and sounded especially the last sound poem where she combined the works of Leon Theremin and Mahalia Jackson into a strange, almost surreal sound poem. How natural Morris came off as definitely added to the lasting impression of her work.
