WOW!!!! I think I like poetry now, before last weeks experience I honestly never liked to hear poetry nor read it. I was always forced into reading it but then again it was nothing like this! When Tracie Morris started talking about “sound poetry,” the first thing that came into my head was music and rap. I thought to myself “is this lady who wrote books and etc. going to rap for us,” when then I was right she did “rap” a poem to us, which in other words is sound poetry.
This event has opened a whole new word of poetry to me, that not everything relating to poetry is boring and old. It can be on the other can very new, not boring and relatable. I feel like when an individual can relate to something he or she can get the real message from the poem.
Even the title can say a lot, if I’m going to like what I’m about to listen to or read or if I’m not going to like it at all. One thing that defiantly had me hooked are Rommi Smith’s titles to her poems and the way she changes her voice to each poem she reads. I can say I will never read a poem by her I will listen to it to get the full feel of her poem and understanding. Without her voice to tell the poem and the bass in the back round I will not be able to comprehend exactly what is happening. To me it will be just words on a page, with her voice it will just put all the words on that page together.
I am very great full to everybody who put this event together to give us this opportunity to be a part of it and to witness this! I was able to share videos of the both of them to my friends and family and they were totally blown away! I’m happy I’m able to share this experience with my class and others outside of it. I think it is time for me to get into poetry! with out being forced into it this time!
