The Imaginary Olive Branch (Asha)

It’s interesting to note that higher education perpetuates class differences within academia. An idea some would explain to be partly due to how “…many colleges look for low-income students where the college is instead of looking for low-income students where the students are” (Brim, 6). To an extent I agree with this statement, that higher education institutions do not do enough to recruit capable lower income students, however I wouldn’t say the fault lies entirely on their shoulders. Sometimes it’s the upbringing of these students that influences their decisions to attend one of these schools. Even if an elite institution were to extend an invitation to one of these students, sometimes due the environment they’re surrounded by, they are taught to reject these schools for being too expensive and unattainable.
